Hardware
Installation of hardware is very important in cabinet making. These hard ware are of two types available in the market. There are no hard and fast rules for placement of knob or pull on a cabinet door. It is your own choice. Most cabinet makers will locate them approximately 3” -4” above the upper none hinged corner on base cabinet or the lower non hinged corner on wall cabinets.
When drilling for knob or pull a 3/16” hole is recommended for most styles. If a pull have a studs (It is simply an extension of the molded screw holes) then hole size is 1/4 “ required for setting securely in the woods. For drilling purpose a 8-32 x 1” long machine screws mostly required. Because most cabinet door and drawer front is about 3/4" thick. However it your cabinet doors or drawer fronts are thicker than 3/4 “ then according to size change screw. Sometimes a drawer to be constructed with a 3/4 “ thick front attached to a drawer box of same thickness. In this situation total drawer thickness is 1-1/2” making a 1-3/4” long screw necessary. All required screw will be available from a local hardware store.
If you are using a pull you will want to determine the hole center spacing of the pull. Mostly 3” center spacing pull or are 1-3/8” diameter knob used. You must be purchase hardware before drilling the hole. There are no hard and fast rules to select a proper size. Select the size according to your own choice.Replacement of Hardware:
Knobs are easily replaceable hardware there is no any change in screw spacing. But replacement of pulls will create problem of center spacing of pull. You should replace it with a pull of same center spacing. If there is difference between existing and new canter spacing then use upper hole of base cabinet and lower hole for hanging cabinet. And drill new hole for other sides. And for drawers bother holes will dill again to maintain it in the center of drawers. These extra holes will be covered with back plate. Back plates are in conjunction with a knob or a pull. It is placed the cabinet door or drawer surface and the knob or pull. It will also help to protect the wood surface, and visually enhance the existing decorative hardware.
